The 27th Universal Postal Congress (“the Congress”) is being held from August 9 to 27, 2021 in Abidjan, the capital of Côte d’Ivoire. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Congress is held in person and virtually. The head of the Chinese delegation is MA Junsheng, Director-General of the State Post Bureau; deputy heads include LIU Aili, Chairman of China Post Group Corporation Limited, WAN Li, Chinese Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, ZHAO Min, Deputy Director-General of the State Post Bureau, Teresa AU, Postmaster General of Hongkong Post, and LAU Wai-meng, Director of Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau.
Universal Postal Union is an international organisation under the United Nations that coordinates postal issues with 192 member countries. This year, the Congress will discuss significant issues such as the digitalisation of postal services and reform of terminal dues, as well as setting the road map for global postal strategies in the coming 4 years. As part of the proceedings, membership of the UPU’s Council of Administration and Postal Operations Council for the next term will also be elected during the Congress.
