Hongkong Post today (December 17) reminded the public that the postage rates for letters and packets will be set by reference to mail format classifications, namely Small Letters, Large Letters and Packets, and weight commencing on January 1, 2016 (Friday). In addition, revised principal postage rates, i.e. the postage rates for Local Mail (Letters and Packets), Air Mail (Letters and Packets), Surface Mail (Letters and Packets) and Local Parcels, will take effect on the same date (see Appendices).
Under the 2016 principal postage revision, the sub-classes of Air Mail (Letters and Packets) (i.e. Air Mail - Second Class) and Surface Mail (Letters and Packets) (i.e. Surface Mail - Printed Papers and Surface Mail - Small Packets) will be abolished. An additional geographical zone, Zone 3, will be introduced for Air Mail (Letters and Packets) and Surface Mail (Letters and Packets) to cover selected destinations now included in Zone 2.
Details of the new mail format classification and the revised principal postage rates are available from the Hongkong Post website (www.hongkongpost.hk). Letter Format Indicators will be displayed at all post offices to assist the public to check their mail items before posting. A printed version of the Letter Format Indicator is available from all post offices.
It is the responsibility of the sender to ensure payment of sufficient postage for their mail. "Underpaid mail items will be subject to delay and a surcharge," a Hongkong Post spokesman said. Postage calculators are available at the Hongkong Post website and the Hongkong Post app to help the public calculate the correct postage.
As January 1 is a public holiday, all post offices will be closed on that day except the General Post Office and the Airport Post Office, which will be open from 9am to 5pm and 8am to 5pm respectively. Customers may refer to the Hongkong Post website or call the General Enquiry Hotline at 2921 2222 for details of the holiday arrangements for post offices.
